Instagram has a superpower: it transforms some beautiful locations into must-see destinations! With all the pictures that are uploaded daily by its users, Instagram is one of the best sources to discover must-see places. And so I discovered Cinque Terre - a wonderful place with a great atmosphere, delicious pasta, turquoise water, and incredible people. And you know how much I love traveling! Stay with me to discover my travel experience in Cinque Terre:
HOW TO GET THERE
Before anything else, the 5 villages that make up Cinque Terre are located in the coastal area of Liguria, in the northwest of Italy. Hence, you can go there by train, by car or by ferry. Personally, I highly recommend going there by train, because the 5 villages are full of tourists and there are not so many parking places. Plus, the price of a one-day train trip is around € 4 and you can visit all the villages!
WHERE WE STAYED
If you'll read other Cinque Terre travel experiences, you'll see that many people, including myself, recommend staying in La Spezia, that is very close to Cinque Terre. Not only is it more affordable, but it allows you to visit even more beautiful places, like Porto Venere, a town that is as beautiful as Cinque Terre.
ABOUT THE VILLAGES
Going by train from La Spezia, the first destination is Riomaggiore, a picturesque, cramped village with a lot of Italian charm. The streets framed by bold colored houses have an incredible charm that will make you take out the phone and get as many pictures as you can. I recommend you to taste the fresh fruits from the shops, to stroll along the streets that take you to a tiny harbor while tasting their delicious gelato. This last place is the region's favorite postcard view.
Riomaggiore is linked with Manarola by Way of Love, a street overlooking the sea with a breathtaking view. You must take care though; because of the rains and storms, the passage can be closed at certain times of the year. Manarola impresses with its gorgeous buildings, the smell of fresh seafood and cute souvenir shops. Also from Manarola, you will be able to capture those memorable photos of houses on the rocks.
The train station of this village is located at the foot of the cliffs, where you have to climb 382 steps or take the bus to reach the destination. We didn't climb all of those stairs and didn't take the bus, because it was already full when we got there. If you wish to visit this village though, please wear the appropriate shoes. During that time, I was wearing a pair of flat sandals and Darius was wearing sneakers, so we had no chance to reach Corniglia.
Once you reach Vernazza by train, you feel like you have entered a whole new world. I don't know, you simply cannot resist its charm. The market square near the beach and the delicious food you find there make this place incredible. Together with Darius, I spent a lovely romantic night on the beach, eating focaccia and enjoying the sea view. You definitely feel the sweet life in Vernazza!
MONTEROSSO TO THE SEA
If you want to stay more on the beachside, this place is for you! The beach with fine sand full of charming orange and turquoise umbrellas is perfect to relax. The colorful houses along with palm trees and picturesque beach make you feel that you are on the Italian Riviera. Don't forget to visit the center of this village, it's full of lovely places to discover.
